This is a bit of a drawing class, a bit of a painting class and a bit of a sculpture class. We start by making our own brushes from a variety of found materials (branches, twigs, grasses, sponges, twine, etc.) based on the kinds of marks each student is interested in making (delicate, bold, brushy). These often turn out to be beautiful artifacts in and of themselves. When the brushes are made, we'll begin to draw with inks and paints and examine how our movements affect the marks and the final works that are made. This class has always been popular because it's so personal and unique. Plus, the artwork is exceptional.
•Class is 3 hours long.
•All materials are provided.
•For All Skill Levels.
•We can arrange to ship final products to you

About Your Instructor: Clara has a BFA from The School of Visual Arts and an MFA from Yale University. She is a recipient of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship, as well as many other awards. Her work has been exhibited widely. Her most recent landscape paintings have incorporated representations of computer-generated mapping with aerial views of the Rio Grande.
She has done many large-scale public art projects, in addition to gallery exhibitions.
About Marfa: Marfa is a tiny town that is culturally vibrant. There are many galleries and art foundations here, as well as top-notch restaurants, bookstores, shops, etc. It is remote, but most nights there is live music at one or more places, there are often poetry readings, or you can take a trip to Marfa Lights. Please see our site for a list of hotels and accommodations. Please email us for additional information.

Itinerary

In this intensive 5-day workshop, we'll study a wide-range of portraiture styles throughout art history. From Rembrandt to Jenny Saville, from Chaim Soutine to Elizabeth Peyton, from Manet to Chuck Close, we'll work through painting styles, experiment with compositions and mediums, and integrate the wealth of beauty into our own work.
There will be demonstrations in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, as well as painting techniques like grissaille and underpainting, as well as more contemporary styles. We'll work through exercises geared towards determining the properties that are most important for you to capture in your subject.
Students are encouraged to finish 3-5 pieces over the course of the workshop. A variety of canvases will be provided, though there will be additional canvases available for purchase. Paints and supplies will be included, though if you have preferred brands or preferred brushes, you are encouraged to bring those.
Class Specifics:
•Supplies are included (we will have additional supplies available for purchase, ie. larger canvases)
•Refreshments included (we will always have light snacks and beverages available)
•This course is for all skill levels.

Participants will learn how to mend broken things and make them into unique, one-of-a-kind pieces. It's a great lesson to learn for real life: instead of focusing on flaws, we turn the scars into beautiful details.

Itinerary

Kintsugi is a stunning craft in which broken pottery is repaired in such a way that the repaired piece is more beautiful than it was originally.
Traditionally, it takes 3-4 weeks for the lacquer to dry, which is often too slow for most people. We'll learn that method, in addition to a much much quicker and viable option that is food-safe and will allow you to use your finished piece in 1-2 days (after curing). We'll use real gold dust on the seams, too. Additionally, we'll have a range of food-safe micas to experiment with.
For this class, you are welcome (and encouraged) to bring your own pieces of broken pottery. Or, if you are feeling inspired, break your piece intentionally just for this class. Your pieces do not need to match, nor do they need to form a functional piece when finished. We will also have remnants and broken pieces that you are welcome to use. We'll show you how to piece everything together and how to work with all the materials. No experience necessary, though a bit of patience is ideal.
*All supplies included (though you are welcome to bring your own pottery)
*We can arrange to ship final pieces to you.
